In the working bee this week we planted three citrus trees in the garden: a lemon, a lemonade and a finger lime. We planted them with a companion plant, comfrey. This companionship is based on citrus trees having very shallow roots and comfrey having deep roots (up to 3m!). With these deep roots, comfrey mines nutrients far down in the soil (which the citrus trees could not access otherwise), transports them into its leaves and then deposits them on the soil surface when the leaves eventually die - ready for uptake by the citrus tree.
