Uni is over for the year but the garden is in full swing!
We hosted a Christmas party in December which saw old and new faces reunited to enjoy all sorts of homemade breads, dips and preserves, as well as pizza, beer and wine. It was wonderful to chat with a group of people all excited about gardening and the environment. We are really proud of the great community that has developed around the garden.
As you can see, our cucumber plants (in the bed) are going very well, and we are currently picking over 1kg per week. They are planted in our wicking bed in a full sun position meaning they get plenty of water and sunlight, both a must for a healthy cucumber crop! We have two varieties this year - Lebanese and Richmond Green Apple. While it's nice to have the old faithful Lebanese variety, the Richmond Green Apple are very prolific (and interesting looking), and are a good snacking size and shape. They were a favourite last year so we decided to bring them back again this season! Our World's Largest Pumpkin plant (around the base of the bed) is also doing well, and we're hoping it will set fruit soon so we can grow a giant pumpkin or two.
Our hard work over the last couple of months is really starting to pay off, with the garden gifting us with lots of beautiful summer produce. In our harvest basket at the moment we're seeing Warrigal Greens (a native edible similar to spinach), basil, sage, rosemary, cucumbers of all shapes and sizes, tomatoes, zucchinis, alpine strawberries and blueberries.
Our tomato plants are getting very high, clearly loving their sunny position. They are reasonably controlled thanks to our months of diligent pruning and staking, but there are still a few that have strayed from their stakes - there always seem to be a few that get away! We're growing several varieties this year, including 'Black Russian', 'Pink Bumblebee', 'Brown Berry', 'Yellow Pear' and 'Tiny Tim'. We are yet to decide on our favourite varieties but are enjoying taste testing them while we decide!
We will be creating our working bee/workshop schedule for semester 1 2016 soon, so if you would like to come along please fill out this poll to let us know which times suit you best. If you have any requests for workshops or activities, please email us or comment on this blog post, and we will endeavour to make them happen!
