Cauliflower does take up a lot of space, but if you've got room for it, it's a fairly easy and delicious crop to grow. You can also grow green, purple and yellow varieties for something different!
Planting time: Plant in trays towards the end of Summer (February in Melbourne) and plant seedlings out into the garden in April or May.
Planting tips: Space plants 60-100cm apart, as they get BIG! If you're short on space, you could try a miniature variety like this one from Digger's. Cauliflower is a heavy feeder, so make sure the soil is enriched with plenty of organic matter, and ideally fertilise the plants every 2-3 weeks as well. As the head develops, you can peg the leaves together above it in order to keep it white (assuming you're growing a white variety). Slightly off-coloured yellow is nowhere near as appealing!
Compatible with: Beetroot, celery, onions, rhubarb, chamomile, sage, dill, bush beans
Not compatible with: Climbing beans, tomatoes, capsicums, chillies, strawberries, eggplant, mustard
P.S. Don't forget the leaves are edible too!
